ARIXTRA is a nonheparin anticoagulant that selectively inhibits factor Xa with a rapid onset of action [16-20]
ARIXTRA: Mechanism of Action
ARIXTRA is the first and only synthetic Factor Xa inhibitor, representing an important evolution in antithrombotic DVT therapy. While other antithrombotics may inhibit multiple factors in the coagulation cascade, ARIXTRA selectively inhibits only Factor Xa.
No Other Antithrombotic Inhibits Only Factor Xa
- LMWHs inhibit Factors Xa and IIa.
- Vitamin K antagonists (eg, warfarin) impair the hepatic synthesis of factors II, VII, IX, and X.
- Heparins inhibit factor Xa and have various degrees of activity against factor IIa (thrombin).
- ARIXTRA is not a heparin. ARIXTRA is the first and only pentasaccharide antithrombotic agent inhibiting only factor Xa.
- ARIXTRA does not directly inhibit thrombin.
